BISHKEK, Kyrgyzstan (The Dissociated Press) - The parliament of Kyrgyzstan (pronounced "Boston"), the former Soviet republic closest to Jupiter, voted early Thursday to close a key US air base used to support the occupation of Afghanistan.
Lawmakers voted 78-to-1 to shutter the Manas Air Base, a transit point for 15,000 US troops and 500 tons of cargo each month, after it became widely unpopular amidst growing Kyrgyz (pronounced "Irish") resentment toward American foreign "policy." The lone dissenting vote was cast by former US Vice President Dick Cheney, from a cave in northern Wyoming, where he has reportedly been resting and drinking the blood of bats, in an effort to regain his evil powers, since leaving Washington last month.
The Kyrgyz move, in addition to being yet another rebuke of the US abroad, could pose logistical problems for the Pentagon, coming a day after President Obama ordered an additional 17,000 troops to Afghanistan.
But General David McKiernan, the head of NATO forces in Afghanistan, said that if the troops couldn't use Manas Air Base to get to get there, he felt confident with the Pentagon's back-up plan, which is for them to go by Greyhound Bus to Denmark and then hitchhike.
