Speaking at a hastily arranged news conference, surrounded by supportive veterans, the Connecticut attorney general and current favorite to replace retiring Connecticut senator Christopher Dodd claimed that he had said he "served in Vietnam" by accident (147 times, in the past three weeks, according to some reports) and that he'd actually intended to say he "served in Vermont," which also begins with the letter "V" and is on the same planet as Vietnam.
"On the few occasions where I said I'd served 'in Vietnam,' the error was totally unintentional," said Blumenthal, "just like in '69, when I single-handedly captured 38 heavily-armed VC commandos outside of Quy Nhon on my way to the laundromat. I didn't plan that!"
Meanwhile, Democrats in Connecticut and in Washington, fearing that Blumenthal's gaff might cost him and the party a critical, and seemingly safe seat in the Senate, took pains to demonstrate their continued support by repeatedly calling his 866 voting number on "American Idol."
Blumenthal, himself, insisted that the issue would soon blow over and that the whole furor was over "a few misplaced words." Namely, the ones escaping from his mouth.
